What does an appraisal cost?
Every appraisal need is different, and therefore, every appraisal's cost is different.
What is taken into consideration is the time necessary to complete the appraisal (my rate is $125 per hour onsite, conducting the necessary research, and preparing the report). Two copies of the appraisal report are included. Additional copies can be requested for an additional charge. That said, I will always provide an estimate of the time it will take to complete your appraisal once I have been able to review the scope of the job with you.
Any additional consulting, deposition or testimony work is charged above and beyond the initial appraisal fee. Expenses for travel and out of pocket items are billed in addition to the appraisal fee.
What do I need to do to prepare for the appraisal?
The best way to facilitate our time together (and keep expenses and time needed to a minimum) is to know the answers to the following questions:
- What is the purpose of the report?
- What is the intended use of the appraisal?
- What is the location and items involved?
Also, please gather documentation, sales receipts, certificates, past appraisals, letters, and any other information you might have before I arrive.
Please prepare for the appraisal:
- Have items ready, unlocked and available (especially jewelry)
- Separate silver from silverplate (if you know which is which)
- If only a few pieces in a cabinet are to be appraised, please take them out
- If possible, pull furniture away from the wall
Keep in mind that an appraisal visit that is done in good lighting and without interruption helps your appraiser do the best and most thorough and efficient work possible.
I just want to know what something is worth ... can't you just look at it and tell me?
No -- that's not an appraisal, that's a guess! I'm happy to put my years of experience to work for you, but I'm all about doing it the right way.
